1. Sequential Scanning and Optimal Distances
Follow a Sequential Scanning Order:
Start with the exterior - this will also improve GPS data
Move inside to capture the ground floor (if it’s cold outside, let the camera warm up and check if the lens isn’t foggy)
Proceed to the upper floors (basement – either start with it or end with it)
Complete Each Floor Before Moving On: Finish all scans on one level before moving to the next to reduce processing time. Check the gallery view to ensure no rooms have been missed.
Recommended Distances: In larger spaces stay within at least 10 meters (32 feet or about 12 steps) between scans and from corners or walls to ensure Lidar laser beams reach them. If the desired output is a point cloud file, decrease the distance between scans to 6 meters (19 feet or about 7 steps) or less.
2. Setting Up Scans and Managing Non-Squared Rooms
Ensure Unblocked Corners and Windows: Ensure room corners are visible and not fully blocked by furniture, as the camera can’t capture obstructed views. If it’s possible, open all the curtains. This will ensure the scan captures window depth.
Multiple Panoramas for Irregular Rooms: Take multiple panorama shots in rooms with irregular shapes, as the camera cannot capture around corners (imagine the camera laser works like a sprinkler).
Capturing good features: Aim to capture the unique (non-repetitive) shapes of the room, such as corners, nooks and staircases on each level that help arrange the “room puzzle”.
Scan all rooms: Don’t overlook any spaces, rooms without scans (missing spaces) cannot be drawn or their area calculated.
3. Handling Doors and Closets
Built-In Closets: When closets cover an entire wall, take one scan with the closet doors open to capture the depth. The same logic should be applied when handling any furniture that blocks corners and can be opened.
Note: If you take two scans in the same position, remember that the first scan is used in virtual tours by default. For floor plan measurements, take the scan with open doors second.
Keep Doors Open During Scans: Always scan with doors open, as it ensures higher accuracy and better room alignment (and don’t close or open doors while scanning).
Scan also nearby doors: It is good to take extra scans near doors for increased precision (especially in bigger rooms), but do not take scans IN doorways - it will have the opposite effect. Scanning nearby doors informs about the configuration of rooms.
4. Camera Positioning and Stability
Position Camera with Overlapping View: Always set up the camera to see the previous position, especially when moving between rooms as it not only ensures a smooth virtual tour but also better room alignment in your floor plan.
Avoid Movement During Capture: Do not move the camera or tripod during capture; once you press the button, wait until the screen reads ‘Done’ before repositioning.
Avoid Tilting the Camera: Keep the camera upright and avoid tilting it when carrying.
Calm and Steady: Handle the tripod gently but keep the camera perpendicular to the floor at all times, especially when it’s on.
